Calculate Fabric & Non Woven GSM Online

Fast, simple and accurate GSM calculation using weight, length and width (in CM or MM).

What is GSM?

GSM means Grams per Square Meter. It is a standard measurement used to describe the weight of fabric, non woven fabric, paper and other sheet materials.

GSM Calculator

For example, a material marked as 100 GSM weighs approximately 100 grams for an area of one square meter.

GSM is commonly used in the textile, packaging, printing, paper and non woven industries to compare material weight and specification.

🧮 GSM Calculator (in CM)

Enter the sample weight in grams and its length and width in centimeters.

Your Calculated GSM
0 GSM

GSM Calculation Formula (Centimeters)

GSM = (Weight in grams × 10,000) ÷ (Length in cm × Width in cm)

Where:

  • Weight = sample weight in grams
  • Length = sample length in centimeters
  • Width = sample width in centimeters
  • 10,000 = conversion factor because 1 square meter = 10,000 square centimeters

GSM Calculation Example (CM)

Suppose a fabric sample weighs 12 grams and its size is 20 cm × 10 cm.

GSM = (12 × 10,000) ÷ (20 × 10)

GSM = 120,000 ÷ 200

GSM = 600 GSM

GSM to Weight Formula

If you already know the GSM and want to calculate the approximate weight of a fabric sample, use this formula:

Weight (grams) = GSM × Length (cm) × Width (cm) ÷ 10,000

Example

For a 100 GSM material measuring 100 cm × 100 cm:

Weight = 100 × 100 × 100 ÷ 10,000

Weight = 100 grams

GSM Calculator in CM

If your fabric sample dimensions are measured in centimeters, you can directly use the calculator above.

The formula is:

GSM = Weight × 10,000 ÷ (Length × Width)

This is useful for fabric, non woven sheets, paper and other flat materials where the sample weight and dimensions are known.

📏 GSM Calculator in MM (Millimeters)

Enter the sample weight in grams and its length and width in millimeters.

Your Calculated GSM
0 GSM

GSM Calculation Formula in MM

When measuring dimensions in millimeters (mm), use the multiplier 1,000,000 because 1 square meter = 1,000,000 square millimeters.

GSM = (Weight in grams × 1,000,000) ÷ (Length in mm × Width in mm)

MM Example:

For an A4 size paper sample measuring 210 mm × 297 mm weighing 5 grams:

GSM = (5 × 1,000,000) ÷ (210 × 297)

GSM = 5,000,000 ÷ 62,370

GSM = 80.17 GSM

Non Woven Fabric GSM Calculator

GSM is especially important for non woven fabric because fabric weight is commonly specified by GSM.

For example, non woven fabrics may be available in different GSM specifications such as 50 GSM, 60 GSM, 70 GSM, 80 GSM, 90 GSM, 100 GSM, 120 GSM and more.

The calculator can help you check the approximate GSM of a non woven fabric sample when you know its weight, length and width.

GSM Calculator for Woven Fabric

The same basic GSM formula can also be used for woven fabric. Take a representative fabric sample, measure its dimensions, weigh it accurately and enter the values into the calculator.

For better accuracy, use a properly measured sample and a precise weighing scale.

GSM Calculation Formula in Excel

You can calculate GSM in Microsoft Excel using the same mathematical formula.

For CM Dimensions:

=A2*10000/(B2*C2)

For MM Dimensions:

=A2*1000000/(B2*C2)

*(Where cell A2 = Weight in grams, B2 = Length, and C2 = Width)*

Common GSM Values

GSM General Description
50 GSM Very lightweight material
60 GSM Lightweight non woven material
70 GSM Common lightweight packaging material
80 GSM Medium-light material
100 GSM Medium/heavier packaging material
120 GSM Higher weight material
150 GSM Heavy material
200 GSM Heavy-duty material
300 GSM Very heavy material

Actual strength, thickness and performance depend on the material type, manufacturing process and construction, not GSM alone.

MM to GSM Calculator – Can Thickness be Converted Directly?

Millimeter (mm) thickness and GSM are different measurements. GSM measures mass per unit area, while mm thickness generally measures depth. Therefore, thickness in mm cannot normally be converted directly to GSM without additional information about the material's density.

Important: A material with greater thickness does not automatically have a specific GSM. Material density and composition also affect the final weight.

GSM Calculator Weight

GSM can be used to estimate material weight when the area is known. The basic relationship is:

Weight (grams) = GSM × Area (m²)

For a larger roll or sheet, calculate its total area first and then multiply the area by GSM.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to calculate GSM in MM?
To calculate GSM using dimensions in millimeters, use the formula: GSM = (Weight in grams × 1,000,000) ÷ (Length in mm × Width in mm).
How to calculate GSM in CM?
GSM can be calculated by dividing the sample weight by its area in square meters. When dimensions are in centimeters, use: GSM = Weight × 10,000 ÷ (Length × Width).
What is the formula for GSM calculation?
The basic formula is: GSM = Weight in grams ÷ Area in square meters.
What is 300 GSM fabric weight?
A 300 GSM material weighs approximately 300 grams per square meter. The weight of a particular piece depends on its actual area.
What is 120 GSM in mm?
120 GSM cannot be directly converted into millimeters because GSM measures weight per area while mm measures thickness. Material density and composition are needed to estimate thickness.
What is 200 GSM in weight?
200 GSM means approximately 200 grams per square meter. For a smaller or larger piece, multiply 200 by its area in square meters to calculate the approximate weight.
Can I calculate GSM of non woven fabric?
Yes. Measure the weight and dimensions of a representative non woven fabric sample and enter the values into the GSM Calculator.
Can GSM calculation be done in Excel for MM?
Yes. If weight is in cell A2, length in mm is in B2, and width in mm is in C2, use: =A2*1000000/(B2*C2).
Can mm thickness be converted directly to GSM?
No. Thickness in millimeters cannot normally be converted directly to GSM. The material's density and composition are also required.

Important Note

This calculator provides a mathematical GSM calculation based on the values entered by the user. Actual commercial or laboratory GSM may vary because of moisture, sample selection, weighing accuracy, manufacturing variation and testing conditions.
